Ecology of the Australian Elapid Snake Echiopsis curta
نویسنده
چکیده
Dissection of 187 specimens provided data on body sizes, sexual size dimorphism, food habits, reproductive cycles and inferred growth rates of this small venomous snake. Adult Echiopsis curia average approximately 30 cm snout-vent length, with males and females attaining similar sizes. The diet is diverse: 52% lizards, 31% frogs, 13% mammals, plus occasional birds and insects. Amphibians may be eaten less often in eastern populations of E. curia than in western populations. Bardicks are viviparous, with three to 14 (x'" 7.1) offspring born in late summer. Fecundity is highly correlated with maternal body size. Neonates measure 10 to 15 cm snout-vent length, and grow to 20 cm in their first year of life (based on analysis of body size distributions). Male bardicks mature in their second year, but most females delay maturity (first ovulation) for an additional year.

Phylogenetic relationships of terrestrial Australo-Papuan elapid snakes (subfamily Hydrophiinae) based on cytochrome b and 16S rRNA sequences.
Phylogenetic relationships among the venomous Australo-Papuan elapid snake radiation remain poorly resolved, despite the application of diverse data sets. To examine phylogenetic relationships among this enigmatic group, portions of the cytochrome b and 16S rRNA mitochondrial DNA genes were sequenced from 19 of the 20 terrestrial Australian genera and 6 of the 7 terrestrial Melanesian genera, p...
متن کاملRapid Radiations and the Race to Redundancy: An Investigation of the Evolution of Australian Elapid Snake Venoms
Australia is the stronghold of the front-fanged venomous snake family Elapidae. The Australasian elapid snake radiation, which includes approximately 100 terrestrial species in Australia, as well as Melanesian species and all the world's sea snakes, is less than 12 million years old. The incredible phenotypic and ecological diversity of the clade is matched by considerable diversity in venom co...

The Bandy-Bandy (Vermicella annulata) is a strikingly-colored (black-and-whitebanded) fossorial elapid snake, widely distributed through Australia. Dissection of 276 museum specimens provided data on sexual size dimorphism, feeding habits, reproduction and inferred growth rates.Adultfemales(x SVL = 54.4 cm) grow much larger than adult males (x SVL = 39.2 cm). Typhlopid ("blind") snakes of the g...
متن کاملElapid snake envenomation in dogs in New South Wales: a review.
Elapid snake envenomation in dogs is a commonly occurring yet poorly described clinical entity. Twelve species of dangerously venomous elapid snakes are found in New South Wales that are capable of causing disease in dogs. Geographical distribution of these species varies, as does their venom composition and systemic envenomation syndromes produced in target species. Elapid venom may be divided...
متن کاملThe effects of selected Australian snake venoms on tumour-associated microvascular endothelial cells (TAMECs) in vitro
The effects of various viperid and elapid venoms on the cellular biology of tumour-associated microvascular endothelial cells (TAMECs) were determined in the current study using cells isolated from a rat mammary adenocarcinoma. Previous studies to determine the effects of snake venoms on endothelial cells in vitro have in the main been performed on either human umbilical vein endothelial cells ...
